Air fryer vs. microwave:
which reheats food better?

The microwave wins on speed — 1–2 minutes for most foods. The air fryer wins on texture — it restores crispiness that the microwave destroys. For soups and liquids, use the microwave. For pizza, fried food, and anything with a crust, use the air fryer.

The short answer

Different tools, different jobs

  • Microwave works via dielectric heating — water molecules vibrate, generating heat from inside. Fast but makes food soft.
  • Air fryer works via convection — hot circulating air browns and crisps the surface. Slower, better texture results.
  • Microwave: 1–2 minutes to reheat. Air fryer: 3–5 minutes. Neither is slow by any standard.
  • The air fryer cannot heat liquids. Soup, sauces, oatmeal — keep using the microwave.

When to use each

Use the air fryer when

  • Reheating pizza — crispy crust, not soggy
  • Reviving leftover fried chicken or spring rolls
  • Cooking frozen french fries or nuggets from scratch
  • Roasting fresh vegetables in under 15 minutes
  • Cooking a chicken breast or fish fillet from raw
  • Anything with a breaded crust you want to stay crunchy

Use the microwave when

  • Reheating soup, stew, or any liquid
  • Warming up rice, pasta, or soft grains
  • Defrosting meat quickly before cooking
  • Reheating oatmeal, leftovers, or casseroles
  • Heating beverages in under 90 seconds
  • Melting butter or chocolate for a recipe

Common questions

Can an air fryer replace a microwave?
For reheating purposes, they overlap significantly — but not completely. The microwave is irreplaceable for heating liquids (soups, sauces, beverages) and for rapid reheating of soft foods like rice or pasta. The air fryer cannot heat liquids and takes 2–4 minutes longer. But for anything crispy — pizza, fried chicken, spring rolls — the air fryer produces dramatically better results.
Which is better for reheating pizza?
The air fryer, without question. Microwave pizza becomes soft and chewy as moisture trapped inside the crust gets excited by dielectric heating. The air fryer at 180°C (355°F) for 3–4 minutes restores the original crispy crust and melts the cheese evenly. It is the single best argument for owning an air fryer.
Is air fryer food healthier than microwave food?
Neither cooking method significantly degrades nutrition compared to the other. Both are relatively fast, which preserves more water-soluble vitamins than prolonged boiling. The air fryer uses a small amount of oil for crispy texture; the microwave uses none. For fresh vegetables, both methods preserve nutrients well. The difference in healthfulness comes from what you cook, not the method itself.
